Gamers Anonymous Poster Series for ASU Polytechnic

Client: Arnaud Ehgner
Medium/Tools: Digital PDF (Adobe Illustrator CS5)
Time: 6 hours total work (including planning, vector drawing, and finalizing layout)

This series of posters was created for my capstone project during my Portfolio Design class at Arizona State University, and are currently being used by ASU to promote its Gamers Anonymous club and GIT Gaming themed classes. The posters follow the theme of being simple single-color renders of three iconic characters, one for each of the current-generation game console manufacturers: Mario represents Nintendo, Nathan Drake represents Sony, and Master Chief represents Microsoft.

Mario: The text could be angled properly on this one to be stylistic. This render is based off Mario’s pose in his Super Smash Bros. Brawl render, chosen because of its ease to interpret in its simplest form. The silhouette has two transparent sections, the moustache and iconic M on his hat, to make it easier to interpret it. The background is based entirely on a screen from the original Super Mario Bros. game for the NES, down to the colors. FUN FACT: DId you know that the bushes in the orignal Super Mario Bros. are the same sprite as the clouds, just a different color? The same can be said of this image! Mario, Super Mario Bros., and all related content © 1985-2012 Nintendo.

Nathan Drake: This is the full poster. This is my personal favorite of the three, partially because I ADORE the color blue but also because it was well designed I feel the composition came out cleanest in this picture. It’s just pretty, isn’t it? Just so pretty. Nathan Drake’s silhouette comes from his Uncharted 3 art, in which he wears a scarf to a desert. And carries a machine gun. It’s definitely distinctive compared to renders of him from the rest of the series, and definitely has some of the most distinctive areas of exploration in its source game. The background of this image is reminicent of the iconic desert scene from Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, where Nate walks through the Rub ‘al Khali Desert to find the legendary Iram Of The Pillars. Nathan Drake, Uncharted, and all related media © 2007-2012 Naughty Dog and Sony Computer Entertainment.

Master Chief: The poster depicts Halo’s Master Chief standing in front of the Halo device with a Banshee flying in the background. Microsoft’s most iconic character comes from Halo 2 in this silhouette. The bottom part is supposed to be a rock or some sort of cliff he’s standing on; the cliff is part of the Master Chief render so it doesn’t appear here. The Halo wasn’t that hard to create, it was the Banshee that was a problem getting done.  The background color seemed to balance itself well with the rest of the image. Hey Ash, What’cha Playin’? Poster Series: Kindry.png
Client: none (personal work)Medium/Tools: png (Adobe Illustrator CS2 and Adobe Photoshop CS2)Time: 8 hours total work (including planning, vector drawing, and finalizing layout)
Part of a larger project made for another class to promote the hit web series Hey Ash, What’cha Playin’?, this poster’s design is taken from a screencap of their Bioshock episode, in which the phrase “would you kindly,” an important plot point in the game, is corrupted in stereotypical Asian fashion by resident cloudcukoolander and series namesake Ashly Burch. This is one of the more popular jokes from the series. The image is done in the style of the iconic Obama Hope poster by Shepard Fairey. The red-green color scheme is a reference to the Puzzle Quest episode where Ashly creates hijinks after finding out Anthony is red-green colorblind. The main image, the Ash image, was created as a vector image in Adobe Illustrator CS2, then brought into Photoshop CS2, where the background and text was added.

Work: Hey Ash Poster 2: Pretentious BullshitClient: None (Personal)Medium: Digital PDF created in Adobe Photoshop CS5Time: 6 hours total (including planning, designing, and finishing)
This is a continuation of the series, featuring renowned opinion-haver Anthony Burch. Don’t worry, this is how the series describes his diatribes. The render is taken from the Persona 3 episode, where Anthony describes the process characters in the (in?)famous Atlas JRPG summon their Personas (summon monsters), demonstrating it after losing all hope of describing to his family and friends at a funeral. He might have had an ulterior motive there; you’ll have to watch the episode to find out. The color scheme references the previous poster in a subtle way, continuing the theme of complementary color pairs with the orange and blue hues. A print of this poster was delivered by hand to Anthony at PAX 13; no word on how quickly he burned it after leaving Seattle.

The third in the HAWP series, this time featuring HAWPstream darling and surprise villain of season 4, Grant Cushman. The art is based off a screen from the Hey Ash Twitch stream and continues the complementary colors theme of the rest of the series with yellow and purple. The text refers to Grant’s absolute love of the toilet accessory and his tenancy to discuss them during periods of duress. Grant Cushman uses this image as his Twitter background! I like to think of that as a trophy.

The fourth in the HAWP series, this one features HAWP series sweetheart and resident avian enthusiast Ashley Davis. This is the first in the series to deviate from the previous pattern of complementary colors, instead using pink/purple and white for no real reason. The image takes its inspiration from the Skyrim episode of HAWP; I have absolutely no idea why I found her vacant-yet-happy stare as Ashly (her similarly-named sister-in-law) stole her stuff…endearing.

The fifth in the HAWP series, featuring occasional HAWP writer and good friend of the show Aaron Linde. I asked what image he wanted me to use to make this poster, and he posted one. I was not disappointed and began as soon as possible. The blue and white color were chosen…well, I really like blue and grey as colors, and I think they played off the cool demeanor of the triumphant Linde.
